Birds have always been fascinating to humankind. Birds belong to a group of endothermic vertebrates known as “Aves”. They rank as the world's most numerically-successful class of tetrapods, with approximately ten thousand living species. Indian subcontinent provides varied habitats to birds inhabiting more than 1300 bird species. Indian Himalayan Region is home to some of the most magnificent birds on planet earth. These include the majestic Himalayan Monal, Scarlet Finch, Blood Pheasant, Cheer Pheasant, and Great Hornbill, etc. The variation of the species of birds is widely distributed in the Himalayas. There are some rich bio-diversity hotspots in the region such as Jim Corbett National Park and Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary which are situated at the tarai area of the Himalayas. These areas provide a habitat to more than 400 bird species including some rare ones such as Dollar Bird, Fish Eagles and Fish Owls. Reserve and Glacier Trails of Himalaya provide a shelter to a vast variety of local and migratory bird
species.
